Sirui Saturn Anamorphic 35mm Cine Prime Lens

Post by MJKlein »

I've been using the Saturn 35mm anamorphic lens and I thought some might be interested in hearing about it because of the crossover between the audio and cine fields.

The lens is compact, lightweight (under 500g) and features a carbon fiber front end. The lens is fully manual and has gears for motor drives on both aperture and focus. I don't use a motor for aperture but I do use a focus motor and the action is butter smooth. The build quality is fantastic. The coatings seem vintage and they produce the classic anamorphic lens flare - the horizontal lines that go across the field, but you can get either Blue or Neutral flare colors depending upon which lens you order. The Neutral lens flares take on the color of the light source.

In this unlisted YouTube video test, you can see the natural, neutral lens flares with the classic anamorphic look:

The lens can also be used for still photography and I'm looking forward to getting out in the field for some anamorphic photos! This is a photo I snapped at the local park and then edited it for the proper aspect ratio:

You can get the classic shallow DOF for blurry backgrounds with this prime lens. At T 2.9 it's not the fastest lens but it's fast enough to get good results at night (check out the video which was shot at night).
