Changes to YouTube TOS

Post by MJKlein »

I got an email today from YouTube outlining changes to the TOS. Personally, I dread getting these emails because as time goes forward, these tech companies go backwards with regard to freedom and what they allow.

Here's a highlight that stood out in the email:

Facial recognition restrictions: The Terms of Service already state that you cannot collect any information that might identify a person without their permission. While this has always included facial recognition information, the new Terms make that explicitly clear.

I'm a live streamer. Does that mean I can't show someone's face in public? What are they talking about? "any information that might identify a person without their permission" can be simply how they look.

YouTube’s right to monetize: YouTube has the right to monetize all content on the platform and ads may appear on videos from channels not in the YouTube Partner Program.

Like it or not, your content is being plastered with ads. YouTube is purposefully making the user experience so horrible that users are forced to join their subscription service just to not have ads interrupt the videos.

Which brings up this question: If everyone pays the extra money to not see the ads, how are they selling ads, and collecting ad revenue on videos according to views that are not happening? This all sounds like a big scam to me.

When people say it's all about money, it's not a cliché. It's the truth.
